Physical Damage — Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between collision and comprehensive?

Collision covers damage when your vehicle hits another vehicle or object — accidents, hitting a tree, rolling over. Comprehensive covers non-collision events — theft, fire, vandalism, hail, flood, animal strikes, falling objects. Most policies include both, and lenders require both on financed vehicles.

What deductible should I choose?

Common deductibles are $500, $1,000, and $2,500. A higher deductible lowers your premium but you pay more out of pocket when you file a claim. We recommend choosing a deductible you could comfortably afford if you needed to file a claim. For example, if you have $5,000 in savings, a $1,000 deductible is reasonable.

What is gap insurance and do I need it?

Gap insurance covers the "gap" between what your insurer pays (actual cash value) and what you still owe on your loan or lease. If your truck is totaled and you owe $80,000 but the insurer values it at $65,000, gap insurance covers the $15,000 difference. If you finance or lease your truck, you almost certainly need it.

How much does physical damage insurance cost?

Physical damage costs vary by vehicle value, age, driver record, and deductible. Expect $2,000–$6,000 per year for collision + comprehensive on a heavy truck, less for older or lower-value vehicles. Bundling with your truckers policy often saves 10–20%.

Does physical damage cover mechanical breakdown?

No. Physical damage does not cover normal wear and tear, mechanical breakdown, engine failure, or transmission problems. For mechanical protection, ask about our equipment breakdown coverage or maintenance plans. Physical damage only covers sudden, accidental damage from covered perils.
