Cargo Insurance — Frequently Asked Questions
How much cargo insurance do I need?
Most brokers and shippers require a minimum of $100,000 in cargo coverage. Some high-value freight or specialized contracts may require $250,000 or more. We recommend at least $100K and adjusting based on your average load value and contract requirements.
What does cargo insurance cover?
Cargo insurance covers your freight against physical loss or damage while it's in your truck or trailer. This includes damage from collision, overturn, fire, theft, hijacking, and weather events. It does not cover mechanical breakdown, shrinkage, or packaging defects.
Does my truckers policy include cargo coverage?
Not automatically. While some truckers policies include a basic cargo endorsement, most require a separate cargo policy. We'll make sure your truckers and cargo coverage are properly structured and meet your broker requirements.
What is contingent cargo insurance?
Contingent cargo insurance protects you when the shipper or receiver has cargo insurance but it falls short (e.g., they're underinsured). It's a secondary policy that kicks in when the primary coverage doesn't cover the full loss. Some brokers require this as part of your compliance package.
How much does cargo insurance cost?
Cargo insurance typically costs between $100 and $300 per truck per year for a $100,000 policy, depending on your freight type, claims history, and miles driven. Reefer and hazmat freight may cost more. We'll find you the best rate across multiple carriers.
