Truckers Insurance — Frequently Asked Questions

What information do I need to get a truckers insurance quote?

To get an accurate quote, you'll need:

  • Equipment list — make, model, year, VIN, and value for each truck and trailer
  • Driver list — name, date of birth, state, license number, date of hire, and years of experience for each driver
  • 3–5 years of loss runs — your claims history from your current or prior insurer
  • Recent IFTA reports — the 4 most recent quarters of International Fuel Tax Agreement reports showing mileage, operating radius, and fuel purchases

We'll walk you through gathering everything during your quote call. Most quotes are ready within 24 hours once we have the full picture.

What is IFTA and why is it required for a quote?

IFTA stands for the International Fuel Tax Agreement. It's a report that tracks your mileage, operating radius, and fuel purchases across state lines. Insurance carriers use IFTA data to understand your operating patterns — how far you drive, which states you operate in, and your fuel consumption. This helps them price your policy more accurately. If you're a new operator without IFTA history, we can still quote you based on your projected mileage.

What types of commercial trucks do you insure?

We insure most types of commercial trucks and CMVs — including dry vans, reefers, flatbeds, tankers, box trucks, step vans, and heavy haul equipment. We do not currently write tow trucks, slide-off/roll-off haulers, residential moving vans, or party buses. If you're unsure whether your vehicle qualifies, just call us and we'll check.

What coverages do you offer for truckers?

We offer a comprehensive suite of trucking coverages:

  • Auto Liability — bodily injury and property damage to others
  • Physical Damage — collision and comprehensive for your truck and trailer
  • Cargo Insurance — protection for your freight
  • General Liability — non-auto premises and operations coverage
  • Workers' Compensation — employee injury coverage
  • Occupational Accident Coverage — alternative to workers' comp for owner-operators
  • Excess Liability / Umbrella — coverage above your primary limits
  • Cyber Liability — protection for data breaches and cyber events
  • Bobtail & Non-Trucking Liability (NL) — coverage when the truck is not under dispatch

We'll recommend the right combination for your operation, freight type, and contract requirements.

What's the difference between bobtail and non-trucking liability?

Both cover you when your truck isn't under dispatch, but they serve different purposes:

  • Bobtail insurance covers liability when you're driving your truck without a trailer — typically between a load pick-up and drop-off. It covers damage to other people's property.
  • Non-trucking liability (NL) (also called "pod" coverage) covers you when the truck is used for personal purposes — going to the grocery store, picking up kids, etc. It provides much lower limits ($1,000–$5,000 medical per person) and is meant as a gap filler.

If you own your truck and lease to carriers, you'll typically want both. We'll make sure your policy is structured correctly.

How much liability coverage do I need?

Federal minimum liability is $750,000 for most freight, but many shippers and brokers require $1,000,000 or more. Hazardous materials and certain specialized freight may require even higher limits ($1.5M–$5M). We recommend starting at $1M and adjusting based on your cargo type and contract requirements. We carry carriers that offer limits from $750K up to $5M+.

What happens if I add or remove a driver or truck from my policy?

You can add or remove drivers and trucks at any time by calling us. We'll update your policy and adjust your premium accordingly — adding a driver with a clean record may lower your rate, while adding a newer or higher-risk driver may increase it. When you sell a truck, notify us right away so your coverage can be transferred. We handle all endorsements mid-term at no additional charge.

How quickly can I get insured?

Once we have all the information (equipment list, driver list, loss runs, IFTA reports), most new policies can be bound the same day. If you need a certificate of insurance (COI) for a lease agreement or broker contract, we can often issue it within hours. We know the trucking industry moves fast, and we move with it.
